There’s nothing like dancing to live swing music. Lucky for us, there’s enough blistering local talent to keep us on the dance floor long into the twilight hours. Here’s a (non-exhaustive) list of some of our favourite South Australian swing bands. Support local music!
Adelaide Big Band
The ABB specialises in performing commercial Big Band Jazz and Swing repertoire, drawing its musical roots from the likes of Count Basie, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Quincy Jones and the GRP All-Stars.
Atlantic Street Band
Atlantic Street Band plays a mix of traditional Dixieland jazz (from the early 1900s) and New Orleans inspired covers of relatively more recent songs (late 20th Century to today).
Lucky Seven Swing Band
What started as a swing band doing Sinatra, Crosby, Martin and Prima tunes or the more contemporary Neo Swing such as Royal Crown Review, they were quick to expand their repertoire with strains of jazz, roots and rockabilly. Their wide appeal is evident and can have all ages and any joint jumping.
Inspired by the classic Gypsy Jazz ensembles of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, Monsieur Swing reflects, restores and reinterprets that great tradition for a modern audience.
The Various Nefarious
Adelaide’s funnest New Orleans and Gypsy Jazz swing troupe! Armed with a double bass, violin, clarinet, accordion, several specialized lutes, and six lungs bellowing with song, they keep the humor and spontaneity of old 20’s and thirties hits alive – no two shows are ever alike!
