Details
Level 1 (Beginners) Lindy Hop
This class is perfect for complete beginners! You don’t need any experience or a partner, just a willingness to try something new. You’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of the lindy hop so you can get on the dance floor in no time!
Our Beginner classes run in progressive month-long courses. The first week is always drop-in friendly, so perfect if you just want to give it a try but aren’t sure if you want to commit to the whole 4 weeks.
Weeks 2-3 will build on what we learn in week 1. You can join us on the first Thursday of any month but you won’t be able to join mid-way through a course without asking us first (just send us an email at swingdanceadelaide@gmail.com).
Level 2 (Intermediate) Lindy Hop
This class builds on the fundamentals from our beginner classes. These classes are drop in friendly, but you need to be familiar with our pre-requisites.
To join this class you will need to be familiar with basic lindy hop and Charleston vocabulary (including basic rhythms, lindy circle, swing out, promenade, tuck turn, send out, pass by and hand to hand Charleston).
These pre-requisites help make sure that it’s a positive learning experience for you and others in the class. If you’re not sure if this class is right for you, please email us at swingdanceadelaide@gmail.com.

What to bring
- Water bottle
- Comfortable shoes – we recommend something that stays on your foot (like a lace up shoe or something with a strap) that you can pivot/slide in. No stilettos or thongs please.
- Comfortable clothes – we recommend something you can move in easily
- Hand fan – not a must but recommended for keeping cool between dances!
- Small towel or a spare shirt – also optional but recommended if you get sweaty!
What to expect
- Safety is important to us. Check out our Code of Conduct before you come to class. This makes sure we’re all on the same page and can make it a positive learning environment for everyone.
- We rotate couples. This means that you don’t need to bring a partner and we all get a chance to meet and dance with everyone. We find this also helps people learn faster, so win-win! If you’d prefer not to rotate, that’s okay too.
- You’re in charge of your learning. we love it when you ask questions and we don’t mind repeating things, going slower or giving one on one help. Just ask.
- Give things a go. We don’t expect anyone to pick things up and do them perfectly straight away. Just give it a try, be patient with yourself and be kind to others.
- Take breaks and stay hydrated! You can take breaks whenever you need to.
- We’re here to help. If you need help or have any concerns, just ask one of our friendly teachers or door staff.
What Is the Lindy Hop?
Lindy Hop is an African American partner dance that originated in Harlem, New York in the late 1920s. It remained a popular dance throughout the swing era (1930s to the 1950s) and is danced all over the world today.
Lindy Hop is danced to swinging jazz music. Some of its key features are:
- Emphasis on rhythm – holding a “groove” in your body that connects you with the music and learning to put rhythms together in different ways
- Improvisation – coming up with ideas on the spot to respond to the music and your partner
- Individual expression and creativity – dancing like ‘you’ and finding your own way of expressing what you hear in the music
- Working together in a leader/follower partnership
- Humour and playfulness
