Melbourne Master Class 2023 – Balboa

Swing Dance Adelaide is proud to announce the second weekend of our Melbourne Masterclass series, Balboa with John and Julia Wharington on Saturday 20th of May.

The weekend will contain a full day of workshops in Balboa followed by an evening social dance. The Introductory Balboa class will be targeted at beginner dancers, with the Workshop 2 and  3 classes suited to those with some Balboa dancing experience, and have done the basic Balboa steps and movements.

Sunday will be available for private lessons with John & Julia during their stay in Adelaide.


Note: all times are listed in Adelaide, ACST time.


 10:30 am  – 11:15 am: Introductory Balboa

11:30 am  – 12:45 pm: Workshop #1 – Intermediate Balboa

1:30 pm – 2:45 pm: Workshop #2 – Intermediate Balboa

7:00 pm – 11:00 pm: Social dance featuring live music from The Atlantic Street Band.


10:00 am -5:00 pm: Private Lessons on request – all styles, all levels.

Please use this contact form to book a private lesson. We cannot guarantee your preferred time will be available, it will be first in first served. Group privates are welcome. The prices for private lessions are:

  • one-on-one – $100 per hour
  • two-on-one or one-on-two – $120 per hour
  • two-on-two – $150 per hour

Workshop Venue

Saturday workshops, and Sunday private lessions will be held at the Kensington Gardens RSL.

Address: Kensington Gardens RSL, 339 The Parade, Kensington Park SA 5068.

There is car parking on site and bus stops for busses H20, H21, H22, H24 and N22 across the road. The Parade has a couple food and beverage options available during the day. More options are avaliable on The Parade further west.

Social VENUE

The Saturday social willbe held at the Duke of Brunswick Hotel.

Address: Duke of Brunswick Hotel, 207 Gilbert St, Adelaide SA 5000.

There is street car parking on and around Gilbert Street, paid parking on South Tce and bus stops for busses G21, G22, G40, W90, W91 and variations are the closest on Morphett Street.

You will be able to eat and order food at the Duke of Brunswick Hotel. Saturday are their busier nights, so please book ahead. You can have your order on the Balcony. Alternatly, a few resturants are located on Sturt Street, and China Town is located diagonally opposite Whitmore Square. 

Live Music

The Saturday night social will feature live music from The Atlantic Street Band, who blend energetic sound of traditional Dixieland jazz with an eclectic mix of other styles, creating a unique and lively sound that will have your guests tapping their toes all night long. From 1920s to jazzy versions of today’s hits, they’ve got it covered.
